Pipeline Technology- Size and Thickness of Steel Pipe

Steel pipe size series

Pipe sizes are not arbitrary and should abide by a specific sizing system. The dimensions of steel pipe are in millimeters, but some countries use inches (inch in English, or zoll in German). Therefore, there are two kinds of steel pipes – TUBE and PIPE. TUBE is used in the mechanical or energy industries to describe the outside diameter in inches. PIPE is used as a pipeline for different media. The PIPE size is used as the nominal size of the steel pipe. A 12-inch steel pipe can also find the approximate numeric value of the inner diameter. The PIPE size converted to mm is the preferred line for the outer diameter of the steel pipe (the first line uses EN10220, DIN2448, etc.). That’s not to say we don’t use the second and third lines. The second and third-row dimensions are TUBE standards for energy construction and mechanical steel pipes.

Steel pipe thick wall series

The thick wall series of steel pipes are from the British Units of Measurement, and the dimensions are expressed by infractions. PIPE wall thickness by Schedule series (40, 60, 80, 120), and connected to weight series (STD, XS, XXS). These numeric values are converted to millimeters as part of the pipe wall thickness series. (Note: Size-Schedule40 value is not constant, but depends on the outer diameter of the tube. BWG and SWG scales are used for the wall thickness value of the TUBE type. After conversion to millimeters, these values become part of the thick wall series of steel pipes. The outer diameter and wall thickness dimensions of precision steel pipes used in Europe and countries using the International System of Units are rounded to the approximations.
